Organic search 101
One of the most common questions i get asked is “what is organic search?” – It’s not such a simple question these days because Google keeps on changing the meaning of a natural search result but the basic definition is any search listing which appears in the normal results section of a search engine.
Now, you are all wondering what the major factors are when it comes to actually appearing in organic search results for any given keyword. Well to put it simply, its all about showing the search engine that you are one of the most relevant sites for that keyword. This is done in several ways:
- Search engines analyze the sites which are linking to yours and determine whether or not the links pointing are relevant and positive or whether they are “spammy” and therefore a negative vote for your sites relevance. These links are also known as “backlinks”
- The tags contained on your site such as the title and meta description tags are used as a rough guide to determine the content of your site however the importance of these tags has diminished over the years as search algorythms have become more advanced.
- The content contained on your site pages and that contents keyword density. This is probably the most important part of any site build, taking into account the ultimate goal of writing good, unique content is to rank well for your chosen keywords without being perceived as having written the copy just for the search engines. (haha its a fine line between spam and good copy)
Now, there are many more things which go into optimising a site for the search engines however these are just some basic things which give you an idea of the process we go through in order to ensure that our clients sites are optimised fully and given the very best chance of ranking highly for their chosen terms.
